Education is one of the most powerful gifts we can give a child. It provides knowledge, builds confidence, develops skills and creates opportunities for a better future. Yet for millions of children living in poverty, going to school remains a dream rather than a reality.
Poverty should never determine how far a child can go in life. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and discover their potential.
In Nigeria, the challenge remains significant. UNICEF reports that about 10.5 million children aged 5–14 are out of school, with poverty, geography, insecurity and social barriers among the factors affecting access to education.
When Poverty Stands Between a Child and Education
For many families struggling to provide food, shelter and healthcare, education can become difficult to afford.
A child may be unable to attend school because the family cannot afford:
- School fees and levies
- Uniforms and shoes
- Books and writing materials
- Transportation
- Meals during the school day
- Digital learning devices
- Other essential educational needs
Sometimes, children are also required to work or assist their families instead of attending school.
The result is a cycle that can continue from one generation to another. Without education and skills, children may have fewer opportunities to secure decent employment and improve their family’s circumstances.
Education Is More Than a Classroom
Education is not simply about passing examinations or obtaining certificates.
It teaches children how to communicate, solve problems, make decisions and understand the world around them. It helps them develop confidence and discover their talents.
Quality education can also help children become more resilient and prepared to participate meaningfully in their communities. UNICEF emphasizes that every child has the right to quality education and that children living in poverty are among those who face significant barriers to accessing it.
For a child who has grown up believing that their circumstances define their future, education can provide a new perspective:
“I can become more.”
Education Can Break the Cycle of Poverty
One of the greatest benefits of educating poor children is the possibility of breaking the cycle of poverty.
A child who receives quality education can acquire skills that may lead to employment, entrepreneurship and greater economic independence. As that child grows, the benefits can extend to their family and community.
A girl who receives an education may become a teacher, doctor, pharmacist, engineer, entrepreneur or community leader.
A boy who receives educational support may discover his ability to become a skilled professional, business owner, innovator or responsible leader.
The possibilities are limitless when opportunity is provided.
Supporting the Whole Child
Helping poor children succeed in school requires more than paying school fees.
Children learn better when their basic needs are also addressed. Hunger, poor health, inadequate housing and lack of learning materials can all affect a child’s ability to attend school and learn effectively.
Nigeria’s child-poverty analysis highlights that deprivation can occur across several areas, including education, nutrition, healthcare, housing, water, sanitation and access to information.
This means that educational support should be holistic.
Providing a child with books is valuable. Providing books and ensuring that the child has food, healthcare, encouragement and a safe environment can make an even greater difference.
Every Child Deserves Equal Opportunity
A child’s family income should not determine the quality of education they receive.
Children from disadvantaged backgrounds often have the same dreams, intelligence, creativity and potential as children from wealthy families. What they may lack is opportunity.
Our responsibility as a society is to help close that opportunity gap.
This can happen through scholarships, school sponsorship, provision of learning materials, mentorship, skills development, digital learning initiatives and support for schools in underserved communities.

How We Can Help
Everyone has a role to play in making education accessible to poor children.
Individuals can sponsor a child’s education or donate educational materials. Businesses can support scholarship programmes and community schools. Professionals can volunteer their knowledge and skills. Charitable organizations can identify vulnerable children and create sustainable educational programmes.
Even a small contribution can become part of something much bigger.
One school uniform may help a child return to class.
One set of textbooks may improve a child’s learning.
One scholarship may keep a child in school.
One mentor may inspire a child to pursue a dream.
One opportunity may change an entire life.
Education Is an Investment in the Future
When we educate a child, we are not simply helping that child today. We are investing in tomorrow.
Today’s student could become tomorrow’s doctor, teacher, scientist, entrepreneur, engineer, community leader or humanitarian.
Education strengthens families, communities and nations.
That is why supporting education for poor children should not be viewed merely as charity. It is an investment in human potential.
Let Us Give Children a Chance
There are children with dreams waiting for someone to give them an opportunity.
They may want to become doctors.
They may dream of becoming teachers.
They may want to build businesses.
They may dream of serving their communities.
They may simply want the chance to learn alongside other children.
Their circumstances should not decide their destiny.
At the Esther Olorunfemi Foundation, we believe that every child deserves hope, dignity and the opportunity to build a better future.
We can help create that future by supporting education, empowering families and ensuring that children who are disadvantaged are not forgotten.
A Child’s Future Begins With an Opportunity
Imagine a world where no child is forced to abandon their education because their parents cannot afford school materials.
Imagine children walking into classrooms with confidence, books in their hands and dreams in their hearts.
Imagine those children growing up to become professionals, entrepreneurs, leaders and people who give back to their communities.
That future is possible—but it requires all of us.
Let us give a child the opportunity to learn.
Let us give a child the confidence to dream.
Let us give a child the tools to succeed.
Because when we educate a child, we don’t just change one life—we help change the future.
